3 Fast Ice Dam Fixes from A&B Improvements

Icicles and loads of snow are part of the wonder of winter, but can cause trouble for your home. Snow that melts on the upper portion of a roof and refreezes along the eaves may form an ice dam which can cause severe damage to your roofing system, including torn gutters, water leaks, sagging ceilings and ruined insulation. This damage could lead to costly repairs, increased energy bills and a damaged foundation. Icicles are evidence that an ice dam could be building.

A&B Improvements Ltd., one of the leading roofing companies in Moorhead, MN, offers the following quick solutions to stop ice dams from forming on your roof.

Quick Fix #1: Bring on the cold air.

You’re going to need a box fan for this. Bring it to the attic and direct the airflow to the part of the roof deck where the snow is melting. The cold air coming from the box fan will freeze the underside of the roof and the snowmelt on top, preventing it from running down and forming an ice dam.

Quick Fix #2: Rake it off.

Stand firmly on the ground and rake the accumulating snow off the roof using a long, extendable snow rake.

Quick Fix #3: Use pantyhose in a new way.

Fill an old pair of pantyhose with calcium chloride ice melt compound. Place the tube across the ice dam and extend into the gutter. This compound will ultimately melt the snow and create a channel for water to flow through and into the gutter.

Keep in mind these are temporary solutions. To avoid clogged gutters that contribute to the formation of icicles, ensure that your gutters are cleaned at least twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
